The Timing Belt or Cam Belt has a fairly straight forward job, but it’s an absolutely critical one. It synchronises the top and bottom halves of the engine, without which, catastrophic engine failure would occur.
Revolving thousands of times for every minute that the engine is active, cam belts withstand incredible levels of stress. So to avoid failure, routine replacement is essential.
To minimise risk of failure, manufacturers provide recommendations as to when cam belts should be replaced which is usually anywhere between 40,000 and 120,000 miles or 4 to 12 years.
